Today I want to share with you two of my favourite tried and true tips for choosing healthy snacks. We’ve all been there before, when you arrive home from school or work, tired from a long day and hungry! When you open the fridge, you want something quick, easy, and accessible. If you are anything like me, after a long day the last thing you want to do is spend time chopping up vegetables. Which is why I’ve gotten into the habit of doing some simple food prep as soon as I bring my groceries home, and trust me, it makes a world of difference when it comes to choosing food to snack on that is quick AND healthy.
As soon as I bring my groceries in the door, I lay out the produce that I’ve bought on the counter and get to work washing and chopping. It helps if you make it fun! Set up your cutting board, knife and containers by the sink and turn on your favourite song. Wash your fruit and vegetables thoroughly and chop them up however you like. I usually cut my bell peppers into small strips that I can use for snacks with hummus or thrown into stir fries for easy dinners. I also wash and cut strawberries for breakfasts and salad toppers (and I usually sample a few while I’m cutting them up…they’re just so good!).
Once everything is washed and cut, I place them in containers to store in the fridge. This brings us to Tip #2! I like to store food in clear glass containers in my fridge so that food is visible right away. This is so beneficial when you’re looking for a quick snack. If the first thing you see when you open the fridge is fresh cut vegetables, you’re probably more likely to grab them.
Clear containers are great to use for storing leftovers as well! I hate when food goes to waste because I forget what leftovers I have stored in my fridge, so having everything visible definitely helps me out.
So give this a try next time you bring groceries home, and see how many more veggies and fruits you can add to your day!
